On the second Saturday of November, you’ll find a magical scene at the Räbechilbi festival in Richterswil. 

The houses and grounds in Richterswil are covered in turnip lanterns, another type of jack-o-lantern on display in Switzerland.

The community building (Gemeinde) lines its windowsills with the little lanterns and creates an enchanting scene for passerby, and walkways are outlined in carefully-crafted turnip lanterns.

This house was probably my favorite display of jack-o'-lanterns at the festival. It was decorated with turnip jack-o'-lanterns in the shape of lotus flowers.

Now the parade is ready to start. Moving carts with ornate displays of turnips line the streets of Richterswil, and children sit on their parents’ shoulders for a better view.

The street is lined with people eager to see this year’s collection of artful masterpieces. Families huddle together for extra warmth on this chilly November evening.

The parade is worth waiting for and is extra sweet with a cup of mulled wine (Glühwein) in hand. Until next year!
